Most professionals will advise that you change your HVAC air filter roughly every three months. This means that you are left with a used air filter on your hands several times throughout the year. There are a number of surprising things that you can recycle, but is a home air filter one of them? Take a look at the answer below.
Can You Recycle a Home Air Filter?
The short answer to this question is that it depends on the type of air filter you have. A typical disposable HVAC filter is made with woven fibres, most commonly polyester or fiberglass, which are not recyclable. When it comes to dealing with air filters, remember that there is also your health to consider. These filters can expose you to dust, dirt and even potentially harmful chemicals. As such, most cities will not accept them as recycling, they have to placed in the garbage instead.
Keep in mind that this means placing the entire air filter in the garbage, even the cardboard frame, despite the fact that as cardboard, it could theoretically be recycled. To determine whether your home air filter is recyclable, contact your city. Most cities will advise that these disposable filters are simply placed in the garbage, at least when it comes to disposable air filters.
Eco-Friendly Home Air Filters
If you are looking for a more eco-friendly air filter, consider investing in a permanent reusable filter (also known as a washable filter). When it comes to efficiency, they are on par with or perhaps even better than disposable air filters. Washable filters are made with a solid aluminum or plastic frame. Permanent reusable filters can last as long as five years if they are properly maintained. They will cost more upfront, of course, but are more economical (and of course, greener) over time.
Keep in mind that if you choose permanent reusable filters, you should take care to ensure that the filter is entirely dry before you put it back into your furnace. A wet air filter can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
